Students at Highland Park High School have been working with their teacher, Ms. Cherryl Delacruz, to develop an app that can track COVID-19 spread based on measures taken by other countries.
The three main developers, Gilbert Barranco, Juan Maldonado, and DeMarques Hinds, explained how their app compares exponential virus spread in India versus minimal spread in Zimbabwe.
They predicted that the strict lockdown procedures in Zimbabwe helped slow and contain the spread of COVID-19 and suggested those measures could be adopted by other nations, specifically India, as it is currently struggling with increased virus spread and overwhelmed healthcare systems.
The students' overall goal is to present the app to a school or organization in India with the help of Ms. Delacruz, who has connections in the local community. They hope the app can be implemented in real-time and make a difference in slowing the spread of COVID-19.
