Legislative Advocacy Task Force

In support of public schools, Superintendent Anderson established a legislative task force to educate and empower students, staff and families.  In 2023,  staff, students and families joined our legislative advocacy efforts as part of our civic engagement efforts impacting staff, students and families across the community. We educate the  parents, students and staff about legislative bills and actions impacting our school community and we provide information to help the school community remain as informed as possible about their legislators, how they vote on issues and on legislation  that impacts public schools.  The goal is to inform and empower our parents, students and staff  to advocate for themselves and the educational services their children deserve as we carry out the mission of Topeka Public Schools to engage, prepare and inspire our students for a lifetime of learning.  Our lobbyist, Jim Edwards, provides learning sessions about the legislative process and serves as a resource to provide regular updates on legislative activity and address questions staff, parents and students may have.   Advocates on the task force select how they will be involved. Their involvement may include but is not limited to:

1. Writing letters to their legislative representative.

2. Stand with the school district to address issues as an ally.

3. Call a representative when we are addressing specific bills.

4. Gain information about bills and speak about a bill or in support of legislation that supports public schools.
