Dr.
Berry grew up In Virginia where he attended Longwood College near the capital
city of Richmond. At university, he earned a bachelor’s degree in
Elementary Education 4-8 in addition to a Reading Endorsement for grades
K-12. Later, he received his master’s degree as a Reading
Specialist. He then spent the next 27 years in International Education
working in Mexico, Costa Rica, Oman, Singapore, and Indonesia as a Teacher,
Principal, and Head of School (Superintendent).
As
a senior school leader, Dr. Berry oversaw all aspects of school including
academics, extracurriculars, and recruiting. While recruiting, he attended
numerous recruitment job fairs in the cities of Boston, Bangkok, London,
Singapore, and Melbourne searching for International Educators to bring to his
school to enhance the teaching and learning benefitting the students. He
plans to utilize his experience recruiting international teachers to continue
to add more diversity and internationalism to the 501 District.
While
overseas, Dr. Berry participated in the first International Doctoral Cohort
through Wilkes University in Pennsylvania. After earning his doctorate,
he joined the Wilkes faculty as an adjunct professor where he still enjoys
teaching today. He facilitates two courses at the doctorate level
including Leadership, Diversity, and, Social Change and Organizational and
Leadership Theory. He also teaches a class entitled Intercultural
Communication at the master’s level.
Dr.
Berry’s wife, Lucia, enjoys her role as a 3rd-grade teacher at Scott Dual
Language Magnet School. They have two children who attend Washburn Rural
Middle and High School respectfully. The family is delighted with their
new lives in Topeka.
He
looks forward to working with the Human Resources team to continue its support
of Topeka Public Schools.
