Volunteer in School

Thank you for committing your time and talent to Topeka Public Schools! It is a proven that educational excellence occurs when parents, community individuals and organizations, and business support our public schools. Students benefit by having additional adult role models in our schools.

What does a volunteer do?

There are many activities to choose from for a volunteer, including reading to students, tutoring or assisting in the library, cafeteria, main office or classroom. Volunteers may work one-on-one with a child, or in small groups or by reading to a class. Students love volunteers, teachers appreciate help, and every volunteer feels that their involvement is valued and personally rewarding.

Each volunteer is special and arrangements for volunteering are unique to each individual. Volunteers can select the location(s) where they would like to work. They also determine the number of hours, days, and time they would like to be involved. Each volunteer is assigned to work with a staff member and placed directly in a classroom or other room to assist the staff and students. Some volunteers work once a month, some every week, and some every day.

How do I get started?

It is easy to become a volunteer in Topeka Public Schools. First, complete the online volunteer application, by clicking here. Once your application has been approved, you will be notified by the school when you can begin your volunteering in Topeka Public Schools. As a TPS volunteer, please be aware of the following:

  • Each time you come to the school to volunteer, please sign the volunteer log. Sign out when you leave. This is our best way to measure the success of the VISIT program, and helps us correlate outcomes for children and schools.
  • Wear identification when you are in the school building. Volunteer badges are available in the office, and can be picked up when you sign in.
  • You are not alone. If you have questions, contact your school volunteer coordinator, or call Phoebe Nordyke at 785-295-3020.
