Some Students are Getting a Jumpstart on College through Online College Courses

Some students are getting a jumpstart on college this semester. Fifty-seven students from the Topeka Center of Advanced Learning and Careers (TCALC) and College Preparatory Academy (CPA) have enrolled in online courses through two Kansas community colleges .

The Excel in CTE initiative (formerly known as Senate Bill 155) has allowed some students to get a jumpstart on their college career by taking college courses. The goal of this initiative is to promote career and technical education by allowing high school students in Kansas to take community and technical college courses at no cost.

In partnership with Topeka Public Schools (TPS), Allen County Community College (ACC) is offering TCALC and College Prep Students online courses in a variety of subjects including: Early Childhood Growth & Development, Criminal Investigation, Intro to Web Design,  and Intro to Pharmacy Technician. TPS is also partnering with Cloud County Community College (CCCC,) which is offering an online Unmanned Aircraft System course.

For those in TCALC, these classes provide both college credit and TCALC credits, which are needed to complete their pathways. College Prep students enrolled in advanced math classes are allowed to choose from a long list of community college courses and are able to choose an online course that aligns with their career goals while also getting elective credit through their high school.

In addition to receiving college credits for free, students get the added benefit of support. Along with their college professors, students may also get support and help from TCALC and College Prep instructors, staff, and tutors as needed.

TCALC is a profession-based program that gives students the skills they need to be successful in their chosen field. TCALC pathways are taught by those in the given field and in partnership with many community organizations and businesses. TCALC provides real-world knowledge and experience so students are prepared upon graduation.

College Preparation Academy, which includes all grade levels, provides the skills and advanced education that prepare students for college and their future careers.
