No Child Left Behind - Corrective Action

Topeka Public Schools participates in the federally-funded Title 1 program. This program provides extra help primarily in reading and mathematics to students. Title 1 requires every district to participate in the state reading and mathematics assessments. Title 1 also requires each state to determine if Title 1 districts and schools are making adequate yearly progress (AYP). Topeka Public Schools did not make AYP for the sixth consecutive year (2011). Districts that have been on improvement for three or more years are in corrective action status. While we have been very successful in making gains for many students, we have fallen short of the mark set by the state on the Kansas Reading and Math Assessments in some areas.

The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) will work closely with the district in analyzing why the Topeka Public Schools is not making adequate progress and in developing plans to address any problems.  A district committee composed of members of the Board of Education, district staff and parents will update our improvement plan to include initiatives that will improve our services to students who need additional support. Parental involvement in their children’s education is the most important contribution you can make to ensure his/her success. We welcome parents as partners in our efforts to leave no child behind.
